Julia Robert's dress from Mirror Mirror

Among the various things I love, which we will delve into through these blog posts, I love movies and costumes, but go completely gaga over movie costumes. In this blog post series called "Costume Consumption" (which also is the name of the Pinterest board I collect them in) we will discuss some of my favorite movie costumes, movie costume designers, etc.

The first costume designer we'll focus on is Eiko Ishioka. She designed costumes for relatively just a handful of movies, but the breadth of costumes in those movies are vast as far as their sophistication and ornamentation goes.

One of my favorite movies starts off the conversation: Bram Stoker's Dracula as directed by Francis Ford Coppola. I saw this movie when it first came out on 1993 before I discovered Eiko Ishioka herself. I thought all the aspects of the movie were amazing from the acting of Gary Oldman (which was fantastic) to the soundtrack which was absolutely haunting by Wojciech Kilar, but then you have this amazing costuming in amongst all of that. Her costumes and portrayal of the characters were on point.

Another one of my absolute favorite films is "Mirror Mirror". This movie is the reason I discovered Eiko Ishioka.

This film has the most wondrous costumes I have ever seen. Such detail on these costumes....its just amazing.

The sad thing is Eiko isn't with us anymore. She died a couple of years ago from cancer. "Mirror Mirror" was her last movie. At least we still have a visual catalog of her work.

There are two other films I need to watch and one other I need to rewatch that feature her work. These are the ones:

I'll come back and review those once I watch them.

Check out my Costume Consumption Pinterest board if you want to see hers and others that will be featured in my blog eventually.
